Now streaming LIVE on The Birdyspot YouTube channel through the 2024 breeding season from Boulder County, Colorado! Currently nesting in this box are Red-breasted Nuthatches (Sitta canadensis)!
(Note that this is a VIDEO-only stream – sorry, no audio is available at this time.)
UPDATE May 21, 2024: Five of the six eggs hatched, and the babies are now 11 days old, eyes open, and starting to flutter their little wings. Mom and Dad nuthatch have been very busy feeding five hungry little mouths! Also, apologies for the number of times the stream has gone down lately and had to be restarted. Problems with power outages and my broadcasting software (Open Broadcaster Software [OBS]). 🙄
UPDATE May 10, 2024: We have baby nuthatches!! They started hatching around 1:00 a.m. this morning.
UPDATE April 30, 2024: Mama nuthatch is still incubating – Red-breasted Nuthatches hatch after 12-13 days of incubation. This means that the chicks in this nest box are due on or around May 7, 2024!
UPDATE April 25, 2024: There are now FIVE eggs in the nest and as of the evening of April 25, 2024, it appears that incubation may have begun in earnest – the female has been on the nest since late afternoon today.
UPDATE April 23, 2024: There are at least two eggs in the nest that we’ve noticed so far, but there might be three given that they are usually laid about one day apart. If you haven’t been seeing any eggs, it’s because the female has been tucking them underneath nesting material before she leaves the nest to do other things like feed and gather more nesting material.
UPDATE April 21, 2024: First egg was laid at 6:21 a.m. local time!
UPDATE April 17, 2024: The Red-breasted Nuthatches and Black-capped Chickadees have been checking out the box from time to time for a while, but the Red-breasted Nuthatches have now made their claim in the last week and have been working hard on bringing soft material to the nest!
UPDATE February 25, 2024: Stream is now live! Who will set up house in the new camera-equipped nest box in my northern Colorado backyard this year? Red-breasted Nuthatches have nested in a similar box in the same location for the past three seasons. Or will the Black-capped Chickadees be the first to stake a claim?
